The Writing Community

For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.

I recently discovered on Twitter a group of people collectively called the #WritingCommunity.  This group consist of independent authors, bloggers, screenwriters, and editors.  It’s not something you join per se, but it’s an online community that will embrace you if you embrace it.

When I created my Twitter account under the name J.C. Maine, I did it with the intention of promoting my latest book, “Pleasurable Consequences.”  Once I created the account, I began following and reaching out to avid readers and authors, hoping that they would be interested in my work.  I’ve discovered that the members promote each other’s work under the hashtag #writerslift, where members of the community retweet you work and recommend it to other members.

I got caught up in the retweeting and promoting because sharing within the community is contagious.  There is also a lot of creative and talented people within the community.  @Dkemeridou, a female author from Greece, wrote a wonderful book called, “Fated to Meet You.”  I also follow a young actor and screenwriter from San Francisco on Twitter named @DanathonJ.  When you get the chance, check out some of the work from @writing_shannon, a talented blogger from Dallas, Texas.

I first joined Twitter under the J.C. Maine name in the beginning of April.  I do not know how many books I’ve sold since that time (if any), but I do know that I’ve gotten a lot of free promotion.  I also know that a lot more people know about my book now compared to the beginning of April.  If you have a Twitter account, please check out the #WritingCommunity.  It’s a good way to promote your work and gain valuable advice from fellow writers.  Who knows, you may make some new friends in the process.
